Aside from lowering the risk of Diabetes, Cancer, and heart diseases, green tea is also known to boost metabolism and improve brain activity. With all the healing properties that green tea holds, one is bound to ask, where did it come from?
Tracing the History of Japanese Green Tea
The origins of Japanese tea can be traced to as early as the 9th century when Buddhist monks returning from China brought the first tea seeds to Japan. Tea then became the drink of choice for the religious classes.
Adherents of Zen Buddhism, in particular, were believed to have contributed to the development of the historical Japanese tea ceremony, which involved the ceremonial preparation and presentation of powdered green tea.
Green Tea in Shizuoka Prefecture
58Today, Shizuoka is known for being the largest tea-producing area of Japan despite the prevalence of green tea production across several other regions in the country. It makes up 40% of Japan’s overall tea production.
Shizuoka’s earliest green tea plantations were formed in the early 1200s. Its climate, fresh water, rich volcanic soil, and proximity to major ports made it the most conducive area to grow high quality green tea. As a matter of fact, Tokugawa Ieyasu, a prominent leader of the Tokugawa Shogunate in the 17th and 18th century, was believed to have a preference for the green tea cultivated in the mountains of Shizuoka Prefecture.
A former follower of the early Japanese shogun discovered, in the early 19th century, the potential of green tea as a trading good and started growing it in Makinohara, a region in the western part of Shizuoka Prefecture. This then led to the production and distribution of Shizuoka’s special green tea as a cash crop.
Shizuoka continues to invest in advanced research to continuously improve the taste and quality of its celebrated green tea.
